Milica (Mil) Vukovic-Smart is a London-based artist, performer and choreographer and a PhD researcher at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London.
Mil’s practice spans dance, performance and visual art and she has presented work in theatre and site-specific settings. Her dance works explore classical ballet canon, formal couple dancing and martial arts, while her art research has been focused on the expanded notion of choreography beyond dance.
Mil’s performance work to date has been described as ‘cinematic’ and ‘strange and uncomfortable watching … in the best way’ (audience members, Rubicon, 2016) and ‘a glorious, fragmented mash up of contemporary, classical and found movement’ (HILT, Resolution Review 2018), and her work Red Lines (2019), a miniature deconstruction of waltz created in response to Brexit, has been compared to Ravel's La Valse but with movement in "Dancing Europe: Identities, Languages, Institutions" (2022).
Mil’s research is interdisciplinary and includes teaching practice in theatre and performance at Wimbledon College of Arts. Mil holds a BA in Philosophy from Belgrade University, an MA in Modern European Philosophy from Middlesex University, and an MRes in Choreography and Performance with distinction from Roehampton University.
Alongside her creative practice Mil has a career in policy, fundraising and organisational development in health, arts and design, and is actively involved in supporting other arts organisations. She is a trustee of Clowns Without Borders and Musical Boroughs Trust, a Fellow of the RSA, and a member of a-n The Artists Information Company, and Chisenhale Dance Space.
